May 3rd first warblers arrive

Yesterday we spent a great deal of time with the help of Ron Judd   our Georgian College coop student Reed Murphy and our Green Tech intern Sidney Coll

getting up nets but today was our first morning of baninf and we were rewarded with the first warbler of the year out of a net a  palm warbler . We saw 2 yelolow rumped warblers before the palm found a net.

we were also excited to see a  hermit  thrush and  the seasons first white crowned sparrow . Curtis MacPhearson took the hermit thrush out of a net and Reed Murphy came up with the first white crowned at the marsh

today we ended up with 78 birds banded  representing 12 species  the high bird of the day was  american tree sparrows  with 43 banded   but there numbers are a fraction of what was here a week ago. We were unable to open our nets due to the sheer numbers when we did attempt opening a single net it could only be for minutes at a time. Look forward to more info about the migration as we track the migration in north eastern Ontario at the Hilliardton Marsh
